Two years between SSLC and a degree
PUC is the stage between Class 10 and a degree. A student joins 1st PUC after SSLC (or the CBSE or ICSE Class 10 exam), studies for two years, and sits the 2nd PUC board exam at the end. The marks card from that exam is what degree colleges and entrance exams ask for.
Karnataka calls this stage PUC and puts it in separate PU colleges, run under the Department of Pre-University Education. Other states say Class 11 and 12, intermediate or senior secondary. The years are the same. Only the name and the school or college they sit in change.
- 1st PUC is the first year. It has college-set exams, and the 2nd PUC syllabus builds on it.
- 2nd PUC is the second year. It ends with the public board exam, held in February and March, with results in April (2026: exam from 28 February to 17 March, results on 9 April).
- The two years together are treated as equal to Class 11 and 12 elsewhere in India.
PUC the course is not PUC the certificate
Search for "PUC full form" and most results are about vehicles. A PUC certificate there is a Pollution Under Control document for cars and bikes. It has nothing to do with education. Two different things share three letters.
Likewise, a PU college is not a university. A PU college teaches Classes 11 and 12. A university gives degrees. Presidency PU College in Hebbal is a pre-university college, and it is a different institution from Presidency University.
The three streams
Every student picks a stream when they join 1st PUC. The stream sets the subjects for both years.
| Stream | Subjects (core) | Leads towards |
|---|---|---|
| Science | Physics, Chemistry, Maths, plus Biology, Computer Science or Electronics | Engineering, medicine, pure science |
| Commerce | Accountancy, Business Studies, plus Economics, Statistics or Basic Maths | CA, B.Com, BBA, finance |
| Arts | History, Economics, Political Science, Sociology and others | Law, civil services, humanities degrees |
A combination is the set of subjects inside a stream. PCMB is Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology. PCMC swaps Biology for Computer Science. Presidency PU College Hebbal teaches Science and Commerce, with Integrated programmes that add JEE, NEET or KCET preparation to the timetable. We do not teach Arts.

How many subjects, and how many marks
A PUC student studies six subjects: two languages and four subjects from the combination. Each is marked out of 100, so the board exam totals 600. Subjects with a lab carry part of the 100 as practical marks. The department publishes the exact split for each subject.
The language options depend on the college. English is one. The other is usually Kannada, Hindi or Sanskrit, and not every college offers all three, so ask the college which it teaches.
PUC compared with Class 11 and 12 at a CBSE school
The biggest difference is the board. PUC students sit a Karnataka state board exam. A CBSE student sits the CBSE exam at the end of Class 12. Degree courses and entrance exams accept both. Students from either board write the same NEET, JEE and CA exams.
For admission to Karnataka engineering seats through KCET, the 2nd PUC marks count for half the rank, which makes the board exam matter more here than a parent from another state may expect. The Karnataka PU board guide covers how that works.
What comes after 2nd PUC
The next step depends on the stream. Science students usually go on through an entrance exam: NEET for medicine, JEE Main or KCET for engineering. Commerce students often start CA Foundation or a B.Com. Read courses after PUC Science or commerce courses after PUC for the full list.
